Lotti & Mina plus Statues Cradling Toys

Free Entry!

In a cemetery near Arras in 1927 two women meet to become lifelong pen friends. Mina is a down to earth lass from Hessle Road who had lost three sons in the War, one of them at Oppy Wood. Lotti is a German Jewess who teaches English in Bavaria and had lost a son in the same battle. As the years go by, the two women reflect on their communities and how things change. Lotti tells of a country taken over by the Nazis and how her life is challenged and transformed. Mina reflects on the fishing community she is from and how, in the end, they are all moved away into the suburbs.

This script in hand performance is followed by readings from Statues Cradling Toys – both are written by Rob Bell. Mick McGarry, Dave Gawthorpe add music and songs to the evening.

Madame Clapham (Talk)

Madame Clapham was a formidable and demanding seamstress proud of her haute couture dressmaking  salon on Kingston Square, opposite what is now the new theatre. ‘The Strange Death of Corsetry’ explores the role of women before and after the war, against the backdrop of Madame Clapham’s salon. At it’s height, over 200 seamstresses worked in the cold rooms. Before the war; fashions were long and intricate. War brought a make do and mend spirit and shorter styles. This formidable lady set high standards, but was unhappy with this new age.

Women had changed; how did Madame Clapham respond?
