Today Corporation Fields is the Tesco Car Park behind St Stephens. In July 1936 Sir Oswald Mosley, leader of the British Fascists, gave a speech there. There was hell on. Flying bricks, razor blades and a bullet smashed through his windscreen as reds and Blackshirts clashed.
Anti-fascism took deeper routes that day in Hull and inspired some to become activists. This performance traces the story of some at the rally and others from across the Humber who made their way to Spain to support the Republican stand against Franco and the wider context of a populist Fascist threat rolling across Europe.
The History Troupe players, Dave Gawthorpe, Mick McGarry and Lloyd Dobbs will tell their story in words, images and song.
There will also be a collection for the Memorial International Brigades Statue to commemorate those from our area who fought in the Spanish Civil War.
